FTL vs LCL Cross-Border Trucking: Which Is Right for Your Cargo?

Two trucking models dominate cross-border freight between Singapore and Malaysia: FTL (Full Truckload) and LCL (Less than Container Load, also called consolidated freight). The right pick depends on your cargo size, value, schedule, and cost sensitivity.

FTL — Full Truckload

You book the entire truck. Your cargo is the only cargo on board. The truck goes from your pickup point to your delivery point with no consolidation hub in between.

Best for:

  • Shipments of roughly 10–24 standard pallets (or full-trailer volume)
  • High-value or fragile cargo where every additional handling step is a risk
  • Time-sensitive deliveries with fixed cut-off times
  • Recurring lanes that benefit from a fixed schedule and dedicated capacity

Trade-offs:

You pay for the whole truck even if you don’t fill it. For very small cargo, the per-unit cost can be high.

LCL — Less than Container Load (Consolidated)

Multiple shippers share one truck. Cargo is consolidated at an origin hub, transported, and deconsolidated at the destination hub before final delivery.

Best for:

  • Small shipments — a few pallets or cartons
  • Cost-sensitive cargo where speed isn’t critical
  • One-off or low-frequency shipments that don’t justify a full truck

Trade-offs:

Consolidation and deconsolidation add handling steps and time. Transit is typically slower than FTL. More handling means more chance of damage on fragile goods. Schedule depends on the consolidator’s sailing/dispatch days, not yours.

Quick Decision Guide

If your cargo is… Consider…
10+ pallets, time-sensitive FTL
High value, fragile, or sensitive FTL
Recurring lane (weekly+) FTL with dedicated slot
A few cartons or pallets, flexible timing LCL
Cost is the dominant constraint LCL

Twenty Logistics’ Approach

We focus on FTL on our 40ft side curtain fleet — daily SG–MY trips with door-to-door delivery and no consolidation hops. For shippers whose cargo doesn’t justify a full truck, we can also arrange LCL through our network. Send us your cargo details and we’ll recommend the right option.
