Lashing & Cargo Securement Best Practices for Cross-Border Trucking

The journey between Singapore and Malaysia involves checkpoint braking, motorway speed and the occasional pothole. Cargo that arrives undamaged is cargo that was lashed properly at origin. Here is what professional lashing looks like — and what shippers can do to help.

What securement actually prevents

Securement protects against four kinds of movement: forward (braking), rearward (acceleration), sideways (cornering), and vertical (road bumps). A well-secured load doesn’t shift even when the truck stops sharply.

Common methods on a 40ft side-curtain

  • Ratchet straps — the workhorse for palletised cargo. Look for straps with a Lashing Capacity (LC) marking, not just “5 tonne strap”.
  • Edge protectors — corner boards prevent straps cutting into pallets and ensure even tension.
  • Anti-slip mats — friction increases the effective restraint of every strap.
  • Side curtains and gates — curtains are weather protection, not load restraint. Gates and posts do the restraining.
  • Blocking and bracing — using dunnage to fill voids so cargo cannot move into empty space.

How shippers can help

  • Use solid, undamaged pallets sized to your cartons.
  • Stretch-wrap pallets tightly with at least 3 turns at top and bottom.
  • Label fragile items and centre-of-gravity for heavy machinery.
  • Avoid mixing heavy and very light cargo on the same pallet without bracing.
  • Provide accurate weights so the driver can plan axle distribution.

What you’ll see when our driver loads

Our drivers walk around the trailer after loading, photograph the lashing, and confirm the number of straps and edge protectors used. If something looks unsafe to move, we will ask you to re-pack or re-stack before sealing. It is much cheaper to fix it at origin than to deal with damage in Malaysia.
